The Punjabi film industry finds itself in the midst of heated controversy following the announcement of the upcoming movie Sardaar Ji 3, starring popular singer-actor . The film has sparked a social and political debate, with certain groups calling for a ban. However, legendary lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has now come forward in support of Dosanjh and the film’s release.

Akhtar, known for his bold and articulate views, expressed concern over the criticism and legal threats being aimed at the Sardaar Ji franchise and called the current controversy “unnecessary and unfortunate.” He firmly believes that Sardaar Ji 3 deserves a fair release and that creative expression should not be curtailed in a democratic society.

What Is the Controversy Around Sardaar Ji 3?

The controversy surrounding Sardaar Ji 3 stems from allegations that the film may portray certain communities or cultural elements in a distorted or insensitive manner. While the filmmakers have not officially addressed the criticisms in detail, social has been abuzz with calls for censorship or even a ban on the film, alleging that it could hurt public sentiments.

Some political voices have also weighed in, claiming that the film’s content may disrupt communal harmony or misrepresent traditional Punjabi values. However, no formal action has been taken by the censor board or legal authorities as of now.

Javed Akhtar’s Response: “Let the Film Release”

Reacting to the controversy, Javed Akhtar called Diljit Dosanjh a “bechara” (helpless or innocent person), implying that the singer-actor is being unfairly targeted. Akhtar emphasized that artistic freedom is a constitutional right and that creative professionals like Diljit should not be punished based on assumptions or rumors.

“Why are we so quick to judge? A film must be seen before being banned. Let the people decide. Diljit is a talented artist, and calling for a ban without evidence is not just,” said Akhtar in an informal interaction with the media.

He also questioned the financial and emotional toll such controversies take on artists. “This is a Hindustani’s (Indian’s) money we’re talking about. Years of hard work, planning, and investment go into making a film. gives anyone the right to destroy that overnight?”

Support Grows for Diljit Dosanjh

Not only Javed Akhtar, but several voices from the Punjabi and Bollywood film industries have spoken in favor of Diljit Dosanjh. Veteran artists Jasbir Jassi and Rakhi Sawant have reportedly condemned the backlash, arguing that Punjabi culture has always been inclusive and diverse.

Rakhi Sawant, while speaking to entertainment reporters, said, “Diljit is a pride of Punjab. We must protect our artists, not pull them down when they are doing good work globally.”

Jasbir Jassi also commented, “Our film songs and stories are inspired by global art. Just because something is new doesn’t mean it’s wrong.”

Diljit Dosanjh Maintains Silence Amidst Row

Interestingly, Diljit Dosanjh has maintained a dignified silence throughout the controversy. The singer-turned-actor has not issued any statement so far, either defending the film or responding to the allegations. Insiders close to the production unit suggest that Diljit is focused on completing the final edits of Sardaar Ji 3 and preparing for the promotional tour scheduled for next month.

This is not the first time the actor has found himself in the eye of a storm. Diljit, known for his outspoken personality, has often voiced his opinions on political and social matters, earning both praise and criticism. However, in the current situation, he seems to be adopting a wait-and-watch approach.

Freedom of Expression vs Cultural Sensitivity

The Sardaar Ji 3 controversy brings back the ongoing debate over freedom of expression versus cultural sensitivity. While India’s Constitution guarantees the right to creative expression, filmmakers often face backlash from groups that feel offended, even before the content is publicly available.

Media experts believe that this trend is dangerous, as it creates a hostile environment for artists and discourages innovation.

“There needs to be a clear line between criticism and censorship,” says Chatterjee, a film critic and columnist. “As long as the film doesn’t break the law, we must allow it to release.”

Why the Film Matters

Sardaar Ji 3 is the third installment in the successful Sardaar Ji franchise, which blends comedy, action, and cultural storytelling. With Diljit Dosanjh in the lead, the movie is expected to explore a fresh narrative, possibly with a message rooted in modern Punjabi identity and diaspora issues.

The previous films in the series were box office successes and gained a loyal fanbase in India and overseas, especially among Punjabi-speaking audiences.

Industry analysts predict that if the controversy dies down, Sardaar Ji 3 could open strong, thanks to Diljit’s star power and the loyal fanbase built by the franchise.

With renowned figures like Javed Akhtar publicly supporting Diljit Dosanjh, the tide may turn in favor of the film. As of now, no official ban or legal obstacle stands in the way of Sardaar Ji 3‘s release, and the makers are hopeful of a smooth launch.

The real question remains: Will the audience judge the film for what it is — a piece of entertainment — or will it be buried under the weight of controversy?

Either way, the incident is a stark reminder of the challenges Indian artists face in the current climate — where a tweet, a dialogue, or even a film title can spark outrage.

For now, all eyes are on Sardaar Ji 3, and whether it can overcome the noise to tell its story.
